EnBW Stuttgart - Setting a new standard in wastewater heat utilization
As part of its transition away from coal and other fossil fuels, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has installed a large-scale Johnson Controls heat pump at its waste-to-energy plant in Stuttgart-Münster, Germany.
The heat pump captures waste heat from cooling water sourced from the Neckar River and converts it into district heating. This innovative solution enables EnBW to provide carbon-neutral heat to around 10,000 households while reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 15,000 tons annually.
Custom-engineered for this application, the heat pump represents a milestone in Germany’s energy transition and is currently unique in its scale and design.
